Berlin 25 years Fall of the Wall
Well, today is the official day the Wall came down in Berlin 25 years ago. They’re calling it, Berlin 25 years Fall of the Wall. Since Valentina and I have been residing here in Berlin for the last few years we wanted to get out there with the locals and celebrate like a true German. Here are a few snap shots with a summary of our excursion.
We started off with a morning mass at the Berliner Wall Memorial. Believe me, neither one of us ever really goes to mass, but this one was held in the remains of a church that had been destroyed with explosives when the wall was being constructed. All that remains of it is a single round building about 20 meters in diameter that was reconstructed as a memorial to the church and the grave site that resided adjacent to it and was dismantled of it’s grave stones. Since the interior of the church being as small as it is, only the well to do where allowed inside. One of them was Prime Minister Angela Dorothea Merkel, our objective this morning.
Valentina and I stood outside on the grounds listening and watching on the large projected screen the sermon being conducted inside. The whole area around the tiny church was corridor off by fence. About 35 meters from the church. And the fenced area continued all along the church grounds and into the old grave site grounds as well. Her public stroll would take her through these areas and into the streets just beyond.
The church grounds and grave site was a mass wall of people hoping to snap a picture of Merkel or just get up close enough to see their Deutschland leader smile.
Our mission here was clear! Get the picture of Prime Minister Angela Dorothea Merkel smiling face along side with Valentina. As soon as the mass ended. The hunt would begin.
We rushed and followed the flow of people as they formed a human wave gathering up speed and size as it reaches the street area of where she’ll be the closest to view. Valentina was a trooper as she mushed ahead of the pack weaving and butting in between slivers of space gaining ever so much closer to the target. Her persistence in obtaining the one photo shoot we came for was obvious to those that stood in her way. They fall wayside losing their ground to her. I was snapping photo shots with the camera up high to compensate for the mass crowd around us. We could see Prime Minister Angela Dorothea Merkel so close now. All we needed was one good push to gain excess for the shot we wanted. And than it happened….Snap!
Valentina: Catch me Angela! I’m falling……
Prime Minister Merkel: Oooh, who’s that handsome guy with the camera?
