Cavemen like heraldic “wild beastly men” were located in African and European iconography for hundreds of years. Throughout the Middle Ages, these creatures were generally shown in illustrations and also literature as bearded and bodies covered in hair, and also frequently wielding clubs and dwelling in caverns. While these cavemen were constantly shown as living on the outskirts of populated people villages, there was a continuous discussion about whether they were human or just wild animals.
Cavemen are portrayed as using shaggy animal material made from hides, armed with cattle shaped clubs or just rocks for hunting, they were considered unintelligent, and also aggressive. The image of cavemen living in caverns derives from that caverns are where the predominance of ritual paintings and artifacts from ancient cultures have been discovered, although this likely reflects the degree of conservation that caves give over the thousand year period instead of an indicator of their common kind of shelter. Expressions such as “living in a cave” have come to be cultural allegories for a modern-day human that presents characteristics that of ignorance or savage like habits.
